Every day in the media we hear more and more about global warming and saving the planet. Just this weekend Live Aid concerts were staged on all 7 continents (yes, 7, Antarctica included) to raise awareness about global warming. The debate remains of whether global warming is a scientific fact or just a coincidence of warm years, but we won’t get into that here.
Listen.
According to the Bible, this world is destined for destruction. In other words, we can’t save it.
Now I am not for a moment saying that we should be wasteful and destroy the earth. I believe we should be good stewards of this world because it was given to us by God and entrusted to us for his glory (see Genesis 1 and 2). But the truth of the matter is that this world will one day pass away.
Before the end of the world, the Bible gives us the signs of the times. There will be an increase in natural disasters, earthquakes and famine; the fish of the sea will die; the sun will scorch the people; rivers will dry up (see Matthew 24, Revelation 16). These are only a few examples. In the end, the earth will be destroyed by fire (2 Peter 3:7, 10, 12).
It is important to recognize what this world is destined for. We can conserve energy and recycle and continue having benefit concerts, but in the end this earth will come to an end.
Stop trying to take the world in your own hands. Turn to the one who created it and holds it in his sovereign hands. Turn to Jesus and live (John 11:25-26).
